Head to head

Jack Rose vs. Pink Lady

Jack Rose and Pink Lady side by side: what changes in the recipe, the balance, the strength and the calories.

The difference

Applejack, lime and grenadine in both. The Jack Rose is applejack alone, sharpened with half a lime and tinted with grenadine; the Pink Lady shown here splits the spirit between gin and applejack, with more lime and only a few dashes of grenadine, so it is tarter and holds more alcohol.

By the numbers

Both have Calvados, lime juice and grenadine. Only the Pink Lady has gin. In parts, a Jack Rose is 3 Calvados, 1 lime and ¾ grenadine; a Pink Lady is 1 lime, 1 gin and 1 Calvados. By volume, the Jack Rose is 63% spirit, 21% citrus and 16% syrup and sugar; the Pink Lady is 64% spirit, 32% citrus and 4% syrup and sugar.

They are about equally strong in the glass (15.3% and 15.4% ABV), but the Pink Lady is the bigger drink, so it holds more alcohol (1.35 standard drinks against 1.01). The Pink Lady has more calories (about 154 against 142), but the Jack Rose has more sugar (7.0 g against 2.9 g). Both are shaken and served in a coupe.
