Head to head

Gimlet vs. Spicy Fifty

Gimlet and Spicy Fifty side by side: what changes in the recipe, the balance, the strength and the calories.

The difference, by the numbers

They have no ingredient in common: the Gimlet has gin and lime cordial, the Spicy Fifty vanilla vodka, elderflower cordial, lime juice, honey syrup and red chili pepper. In parts, a Gimlet is 1 gin and 1 lime cordial; a Spicy Fifty is 5 vodka, 1½ elderflower, 1½ lime and 1 honey. By volume, the Gimlet is 50% syrup and sugar and 50% spirit; the Spicy Fifty is 55% spirit, 28% syrup and sugar and 17% citrus. Different bottles, similar balance: that makes them close cousins on the ratio map.

The Gimlet is the stronger drink in the glass (14.6% ABV against 12.5%), but being smaller it holds about the same alcohol (1.01 and 0.99 standard drinks). The Gimlet has more calories (about 162 against 149) and more sugar (15.8 g against 12.8 g). Both are served in a coupe; the Gimlet is stirred, the Spicy Fifty shaken.
