The recipe

How to make it

  1. 1For four: warm a bottle of red wine with ½ cup of sugar, a cinnamon stick and two lemon slices studded with four cloves each.
  2. 2Stir until it just comes to a boil, then take it off the heat.
  3. 3Remove the spices and lemon and ladle into warm glasses.

Garnish: A cinnamon stick and a lemon wedge.

Saveur’s recipe makes four; the numbers here are for one glass. Bringing the wine to a boil cooks off some alcohol, so the real strength is a little lower.

The ratio

4½ : 1
