Head to head

Boulevardier vs. Negroni

Boulevardier and Negroni side by side: what changes in the recipe, the balance, the strength and the calories.

The difference

Swap the Negroni’s gin for bourbon or rye and you have a Boulevardier. The whiskey is also poured heavier, one and a half parts to one each of Campari and vermouth, so the Boulevardier is rounder and richer and holds more alcohol.

By the numbers

The Boulevardier uses bourbon where the Negroni uses gin; both have Campari and sweet vermouth. In parts, a Boulevardier is 1½ whiskey, 1 Campari and 1 vermouth; a Negroni is 1 gin, 1 Campari and 1 vermouth. By volume, the Boulevardier is 57% fortified wine and bitter and 43% spirit; the Negroni is 67% fortified wine and bitter and 33% spirit. That makes them close cousins on the ratio map.

They are about equally strong in the glass (21.0% and 21.3% ABV), but the Boulevardier is the bigger drink, so it holds more alcohol (1.82 standard drinks against 1.35). The Boulevardier has more calories (about 225 against 179), with the same sugar (11.7 g each). The Boulevardier is stirred and served in a coupe; the Negroni is built and served in a rocks glass.
