Head to head

Siesta vs. Whiskey Sour

Siesta and Whiskey Sour side by side: what changes in the recipe, the balance, the strength and the calories.

The difference, by the numbers

Both have simple syrup. Only the Siesta has tequila, lime juice, grapefruit juice and Campari; only the Whiskey Sour has bourbon and lemon juice. In parts, a Siesta is 3 tequila, 1½ lime, 1 grapefruit, 1½ syrup and ½ Campari; a Whiskey Sour is 2¼ whiskey, 1¼ lemon and 1 syrup. By volume, the Siesta is 40% spirit, 33% citrus, 20% syrup and sugar and 7% fortified wine and bitter; the Whiskey Sour is 50% spirit, 28% citrus and 22% syrup and sugar. That makes them close cousins on the ratio map.

The Whiskey Sour is the stronger drink in the glass (13.4% ABV against 11.5%), but being smaller it holds about the same alcohol (1.12 and 1.14 standard drinks). The Siesta has more calories (about 182 against 168) and more sugar (17.5 g against 13.0 g). Both are shaken and served in a coupe.
